“An empty lantern provides no light. Self-care is the fuel that allows your light to shine brightly.” -Unknown
Self-care spans a spectrum of practices we don’t normally see on social media or television. There are many ways to think about self-care and just how multidimensional it is. Here are a few categories that might you help broaden the way you view self-care in your own life:
Social Self-Care. Taking care of yourself doesn’t mean you do it alone. There are times when you have to be in a community with someone else or a group in order to better understand yourself. Social self-care is about connection and the benefit that connection brings to you and your life.
Spiritual Self-Care. When you are in need of grounding or affirmation in your faith, it might be time for spiritual self-care. This kind of self-care includes going to places of worship, being out in nature, or meditating.
Creative Self Care. We are all creative beings and that creativity needs to be cultivated. You might dance, paint, go to the playground, drive a new way to work, or listen to an album with this type of self-care.
Emotional Self Care. Noticing your emotions is worthwhile work. This might look like journalling, going to therapy, or setting a boundary with someone.
Workplace Self Care. Jobs are often a source of a lot of stress. It is important to create self-care practices at work. This might look like breaks in between meetings, not checking email at certain times, or doing certain work tasks on a consistent basis during the week.
Physical Self Care. This is the most commonly known self-care category. It can include exercise, sleep, scheduling routine medical exams, and stretching. Our bodies do so much for us and we need to love it every chance we get.
This is not an exhaustive list, but a starting point when reflecting on your self care practices.
Take a moment to reflect:
What type of self-care are you craving right now?
How could focusing on self-care enhance your leadership?
